Short Description of Instrument
The Parkinson's Psychosis Rating Scale (PPRS) is a 6-item clinician rated scale that measures the severity of psychosis symptoms in PD patients.
Comments/Special Instructions
The PPRS is a suggested scale for use in Parkinson's Disease Psychosis by a Movement Disorder Society Task Force in 2008 (Fernandez et al., 2008).
Scoring and Psychometric Properties
Scoring: The 6 items (visual hallucinations, illusions/misidentification, paranoid ideation, sleep disturbance, confusion, and sexual preoccupation) are scored from 1=no symptoms to 4=extreme symptoms and summed for a total score. The total score guidelines are mild (8-12), moderate (13-18), and severe (19-24).
 
Psychometric Properties: In a PDP sample, interrater reliability for each item was good (Spearman's rho =0.8-0.99), internal consistency across three rater for each item had a range of Cronbach's alpha=0.31-0.80. (Friedberg et al., 1998).
Rationale/Justification
Strengths: The PPRS is short and covers some psychotic features (illusions, misperceptions) not assessed with other scale.
 
Weaknesses: The PPRS does not cover the full spectrum of psychotic phenomena. Items for sleep disturbance, confusion, and sexual preoccupation are not part of the psychosis construct but may be related symptoms.
